In the final segment of our roulette betting tutorial, we’ll be talking about that last collection of wagers known as Announced Bets. They are called this because, in most live casinos, you’ll need to announce to the croupier if you intend to make them. The croupier will, in turn, ask you for a specific number of chips, then place them in the appropriate locations on the roulette table.
Before we continue, if you haven’t done so already, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our previous roulette guides:
Announced Bets in French Roulette
The following wagers are often associated with the game of French Roulette, but can also be placed in most single-zero (European) roulette games. Due to their French association, they come with French names; including Voisins du Zéro (Neighbours of Zero), Tier Du Cylindre (Third of the Wheel), Orphelins (Orphans), Jeu Zéro (Zero Game), and Neighbours.
Traditional roulette bets are placed on groups of sequenced numbers, or numbers that are adjacent on the roulette table diagram. Announced bets are, instead, based on groups of numbers as they appear on the roulette wheel.
Voisins du Zéro
This is a wager on 17 numbers including the 0, the 9 numbers to the left of the 0, and 7 numbers to the right; 22-25 on the wheel. Those number include the 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 25, 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25. To place this bet, hand the croupier 9 chips and ask to place a bet on Voisins du Zéro, or Neighbours of Zero. The croupier will place your chips in the following locations:
1 Trio Bet (2 chips): 0-2-3
1 Corner Bet (2 chips): 25/26/28/29
5 Split Bets (1 chip each): 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22, and 32/35
Tier Du Cylindre
This also involves a large group of numbers, wagering on those opposite the 0 on the wheel. There are 12 numbers in all, including 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23,10, 5, 24, 16 and 33. You can place this bet with 6 chips, asking the croupier to place them on Tiers, or Third of the Wheel. The croupier will place the six chips accordingly:
6 Split Bets (1 chip each): 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30 and 33/36
Orphelins
Another grouped number bet, this one covers all remaining numbers that aren’t involved in Vousins or Tiers. There are two groups of them on the wheel—8 numbers in all—including 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31 and 34. Hand the croupier 4 chips and ask for a bet on the Orphelins, or Orphans. The croupier will place them on:
4 Split Bets (1 chip each): 6/9, 14/17, 17/20 and 31/34.
Jeu Zéro
Another neighbouriong numbers bet, this one involves the 0, and the 3 numbers to each side of the 0, on the roulette wheel. They include 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, and 19. Hand the croupier 4 chips, which he/she will place on:
3 Split Bets (1 chip each): 0/3, 12/15 and 32/35
1 Single Bet (1 chip): 26
Neighbours
One of the most common announced bets in roulette, Neighbours is not a bet on a specific group of numbers, but rather a bet on any 5 adjacent numbers on the roulette wheel. When making this bet, you will tell the croupier which group of 5 numbers you wish to bet on, and hand him/her 5 chips, resulting in 5 single-number bets.
