The short version. Single-event sports betting has been legal in Canada since the Criminal Code amendment of 2021, but who may take the bet still depends on the province: Ontario has a licensed private market through iGaming Ontario, Alberta opened its own in 2026, and everywhere else the legal operator is the provincial lottery corporation.
Betting and casino play are priced in completely different ways, and a player who moves from one to the other without noticing usually pays for the lesson. A slot has a fixed return. A betting market has a margin baked into the odds — the "vig" — and that margin varies by sport, by league and by how much money the book expects on each side. Shopping the same wager across two books is therefore worth more than any staking system.
What the 2026 change actually did
Before it, a Canadian could bet on sports only as a parlay through a provincial product — several outcomes bundled together, which multiplied the house margin. The amendment allowed a bet on a single event. It did not make every operator legal everywhere: it changed what a bet may be, while the question of who may offer it stayed with the provinces.
Sections in this cluster
Sports covers markets, lines and how prices move. eSports is kept separate because the leagues, the data feeds and the settlement rules are not the same as traditional sport. Lottery covers the provincial products and the odds behind them. Horse racing has its own pari-mutuel pool model, which is not bookmaking at all. Novelty markets — awards, television, politics — sit at the end because they are priced on opinion rather than on data.
The one habit that matters
Record the price you took, not just the result. Over a season the difference between betting a line at –110 and the same line at –105 is larger than the difference between a winning record and a break-even one, and it is the only variable a bettor fully controls.
